Free Checklist: Is Your New SIL Home Move-In Ready?

Moving into a Supported Independent Living (SIL) home is an exciting milestone—but making sure everything is ready can feel overwhelming. Whether you’re a participant, family member, or support coordinator, having a clear checklist helps ease the transition and ensures a safe, comfortable, and supportive environment from day one.

To help you out, we’ve created this free, easy-to-follow checklist to make sure your SIL home is truly move-in ready.

1. Home Safety & Accessibility

Safety and accessibility are the foundation of a great SIL home. Start by checking:

  • Wheelchair access to all common areas and bathrooms

  • Ramps, rails, and grab bars installed where needed

  • Smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and emergency exits

  • Slip-resistant flooring

  • Doors and hallways wide enough for mobility aids

  • Adequate lighting inside and out

2. Participant Comfort & Personalization

This is their new home—let it feel like one:

  • Bedroom fully furnished (bed, drawers, wardrobe, etc.)

  • Space for personal items and decorations

  • Internet/TV setup (if requested)

  • Temperature control (heating, cooling, fans, etc.)

  • Clean bedding and towels ready to go

3. Staff & Support Readiness

Make sure your support team is prepared from the start:

  • Trained staff rostered and introduced to the participant

  • Support Plan reviewed and implemented

  • Medication management system in place

  • Emergency contacts and procedures documented

  • Daily routine and preferences discussed with participant

4. Daily Living Essentials

A smooth move-in includes having the basics ready:

  • Kitchen stocked with initial groceries

  • Cooking equipment and utensils available

  • Bathroom supplies (soap, shampoo, toilet paper, etc.)

  • Laundry access and detergent available

  • Cleaning supplies on hand

5. NDIS & Documentation

Avoid future stress by ensuring compliance is already handled:

  • SIL Service Agreement signed and stored

  • Incident reporting process understood by all staff

  • Participant’s NDIS goals integrated into daily support

  • Schedule of support activities ready and visible

  • Health assessments or allied health plans accessible

🎉 Ready to Move In?

If you’ve checked everything on this checklist, congratulations! You’re ready for a smooth and supportive transition into your SIL home. Remember, this is just the beginning of a journey toward greater independence, community connection, and quality of life.
