I had 1 on each side of the bed at the beginning. I felt secure knowing I wouldn't accidentally troll out of the small twin bed I used after back surgery. Then as I got stronger I was able to remove 1 and the other stayed as it was helpful to use for getting up.

Handle is extremely well padded, very sturdy metal tubes, you can adjust the height of the rail, all smooth edges after assembled so it wont damage bottom of mattress or top of box spring.
